How zakat is calculated

Take your zakat-eligible assets (cash, gold and silver, business inventory, investments, money owed to you) and subtract your debts. If what remains meets or exceeds the nisab threshold and has been held for a full lunar year, 2.5% (1/40th) of your net assets is due as zakat. For cash-heavy assets, most scholars recommend using the silver nisab (52.5 Bhori of silver) โ€” this better protects the rights of the poor. Enter the current silver market price and the calculator works out the nisab for you.

Frequently asked questions

What is nisab and how much is it?
Nisab is the minimum level of wealth above which zakat becomes obligatory. The silver nisab is the value of 52.5 Bhori (612.36 grams) of silver, and the gold nisab is 7.5 Bhori of gold. For cash-heavy assets, using the silver nisab is the safer and more common practice.
Do I need to pay zakat on gold jewelry I wear?
Views differ by school of thought โ€” in the Hanafi view, zakat is due even on jewelry in personal use. To be safe, include the jewelry's value in your calculation and consult a scholar.
Is zakat due on a house or car?
There's no zakat on a house, car or furniture you use personally โ€” only property held with the intention to sell counts as business inventory.
Is my data stored anywhere?
No โ€” the entire calculation happens in your browser, and no data is sent to any server.
