How the leap year rule works

A solar year (the time it takes for Earth to make a complete trip around the Sun) is roughly 365.2422 days. Since our standard calendar has only 365 days, we accumulate an offset of about a quarter of a day every year. To correct for this, we add a leap day (February 29th) every four years. The rules for leap years in the Gregorian Calendar are as follows:

• The year must be **divisible by 4**.
• If the year is divisible by 100, it is **not a leap year**...
• ...unless it is also **divisible by 400**. E.g. the year 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 and 2100 are not.
